Dehydrated Banana Chips



 Slice your bananas and dip in pineapple juice, then set on your dehydrating tray. After a few hours, I turn the banana chips over and place them right on the vented tray. Let dry overnight.

 As you can see, my basil is doing well--it smells so good! Anyway, the banana chips don't turn out like the preserved store bought kind, you know, real crispy. These are more like taffy with such a wonderful banana flavor. I love them with chocolate chips--OK, so what don't I like with chocolate chips!

  1. Do you use these in a recipe or just for snacks. What's the best kind of food dehydrator to get, cause I don't have one yet?

  2. They are so good to snack on that I haven't yet used them in a recipe, but I was thinking that they might work in banana bread. But really, as a snack, especially with a few chocolate chips to go along, I don't think any recipe could top it.

    1. Ahhh yes, chocolate chips, that would go quite nicely with banana chips! Thank you! If anyone has some good advice on what kind of food dehydrator to buy, that would be great.

  3. About the dehydrator--Kelly may have more info on that. Mine is a NESCO All American Harvest, and I have really enjoyed it, but Kelly has one with just rectangular flat sheets (mine is circular like a donut). Mine was under $100. I can't really remember exactly how much. I've used it probably every week at least for over three years, so I think I've got my money's worth already. Works like the first day I used it.

  5. Mine is called Excalibur. It has nine trays. I looooove the square shape. I used to have a simple $30dehydrator from Big Lots, but it doesn't let you adjust the temperatures. You can buy a 4 tray or 9 tray I believe. I'm pretty sure Mom bought half of this for me. She helps me spend money. :) I think I got it for under 200. It has been soooooooooooo worth it for me. I can dehydrate my tomatoes and have sun dried tomatoes or apples or peach leather or crackers, cookies, breads, my own herbs! I love having it. It is very durable too. Mine came with some flat sheets for drying leathers, etc. Those are so handy. So, either buy them seperate or find a deal online that comes with them. They are awesome. You can also redehydrate stale foods, chips etc. and they come back to life! and taste better. I just googled excalibur dehydrators and looked for the best deal and walla!

    1. I didn't make that clear. The Excalibur comes in a 4 or 9 tray and is square shaped. It was the Big lots one that was circular and didn't have a temperature setting.

  8. I learned that the reason the banana chips from the grocery store are crispy is because they are first deep fried and then dried.

  9. I wonder what would happen if we sprayed them with olive oil instead of pineapple juice?--I think I'll do some experimenting.
